Working with others towards the same goal can be challenging, but is ultimately rewarding. I work best in teams that come together to find creative and adaptable solutions to challenges.

There are many ways to tell a story, but getting the words right will make it universal. The ability to step into another’s shoes makes designing an accessible product more intuitive.

How one solves a problem will be different for each person. I strive to approach them with an open mind to put forth a unique solution.

I am Dana Swithenbank, a Junior UX/UI Designer based on the Central Coast of California. After graduating with a degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing and a minor in Film & Media Studies, I worked in Administrative services for over eight years before transitioning to UX/UI Design via a bootcamp after finding myself in need of a change of pace. As a designer, I have learned to approach designs with users in mind to ensure products are functional as well as aesthetic. I would love to work with creators wanting to connect with their users in new and thoughtful ways. I tend to be drawn to clean designs with striking branding, and an ease of usability and accessibility for the user base. In my spare time, I enjoy learning new arts and crafts, reading with my cat, and trying to befriend the local crows.

Stories
Stories have always been a part of my life, whether reading them with my cat, Jinx, or doing my own writing. Being able to step into the minds of characters I create allows me to see the world in a different way from where I normally live. It allows me to have empathy for the life experiences of others and what they may ultimately need when using the products I design. The ease of escaping into a book helps me step into the world of users to create the best product I can for them. Creating storyboards and journey maps in the beginning of the design process to get the team on the same wavelength comes more naturally to me. Though working on case studies, telling the story from beginning to end about the entire process and, therefore, letting those outside the design team understand the decisions made, is a place I find myself comfortable.
Painting
Painting miniatures takes a steady hand, focus, and patience. Painting a figure that is around one inch tall while trying to make it look like a recognizable character is no easy feat and not learned overnight. I found through painting figures for myself and fellow Dungeons and Dragons players, that I am always able to learn new skills and practicing patience when working on a creative venture is of the utmost importance. Much like the process of painting a face, iterations, making the changes the team learns from user testing feedback and interviews, take patience and focus to get the desired outcome. Through perseverance, working through the more difficult design aspects, the final product can be something outstanding.

Gaming
As previously mentioned, I partake in weekly collaborative storytelling sessions through Dungeons and Dragons, have had the opportunity to teach people how to play, and even run some sessions myself. This has encouraged me to be more of a leader within the group, while making sure everyone in the party is able to have their voices heard. In design, these skills are a necessity when working in a group. Whether in group critiques, where one needs to clearly and tactfully communicate suggestions for changes on a project, or when working more closely together on a project to solve a common problem, skills in communication and collaboration are key to a good designer.
In the future, I would like to be working as a UX Designer with a team dedicated to producing the best version of their design possible. I am committed to growing into a designer focusing on empathy, creativity, and a sense of collaboration to every product I work on.
